The gemstone guide

What to look for, and how to look after what you buy.

Colour

In coloured gemstones, colour is the first thing the eye reads and the biggest driver of value. Look for vivid saturation that stays lively in both daylight and indoor light.

Clarity

Most natural coloured stones contain tiny inclusions. What matters is whether they affect the stone's beauty to the naked eye.

Cut

A well-cut stone reflects light evenly across its surface. Precision and fantasy cuts, like the faceted patterns on our garnets, are designed to maximise play of light.

Carat

Carat measures weight, not size. Different gems have different densities, so two stones of equal weight can look different in size.

Origin and certification

Origin, such as Mogok in Myanmar, can influence rarity. Fine pieces should come with a report from a recognised gemmological laboratory. Ask us about the documentation for any stone.

Caring for your jewellery

Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Store pieces separately, and remove them before swimming, exercise or cleaning.
